What is Juvederm?
Juvederm is a family of injectable hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your body. It adds lubrication to joints and a cushion-like effect to the skin and tissues. Juvederm works to provide 9 months to one year of correction for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and lip augmentation. Specifically, Juvéderm is a non-animal, cross-linked, hyaluronic-acid-based filler that works by restoring volume to the face.
Juvederm products are a smooth consistency gel. In contrast to some hyaluronic gel products that have a granular consistency. They are developed using Hylacross technology to allow a smoother and malleable gel. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in the body. Hyaluronic acid works by holding in water at the injection site and acting as a cushioning agent. It adds temporary volume and a smoother appearance to the skin. Most patients need more than one treatment to achieve optimal results.
Types of Juvederm
The Juvederm range of products meets specific needs depending on the area of the face and the increase in the volume.
Juvederm Volbella® XC works for lips and around the lip area to add subtle volume and to smooth vertical lip lines
Voluma® XC work the cheek area to give a subtle lift that increases volume and contours the cheek area
Juvederm® XC Is suitable for moderate or severe facial folds or wrinkles such as the fold that runs from your nose to mouth (parentheses lines)
Vollure™ XC is also suitable for moderate or severe facial wrinkles or folds but may last longer than Juvederm® XC
How does Juvederm work?
By being injected into the skin. Juvéderm temporarily restores the skin’s support structure and smooths out wrinkles. It replicates hyaluronic acid.
It stimulates the production of the connective tissue that plumps the skin (collagen). As you get older, the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen decreases. This increases the appearance of sagging and wrinkling of the facial skin.
During the procedure, your doctor typically uses a pen to mark the areas. Your doctor will then inject Juvederm into the target area. They will also lightly massage the area to ensure even distribution and reduce the chance of swelling. The entire procedure usually takes between 15 and 60 minutes.
Juvederm injections contain a small amount of pain-reducing lidocaine. This will help minimize any pain you feel during treatment and make it go away quickly.
How long does the Juvederm correction last?
Correction with Juvederm is temporary. Re-injections may be needed. Typically between 9 months and one year after the initial injection. Smaller injections for repeat procedures.
Juvederm XC products also contain the local anesthetic lidocaine for a more comfortable injection. The Ultra XC products contain more highly cross-linked formulations for volumizing and correction of deeper folds and wrinkles.
